B”H

Dear Kindergarten Parents of the Purple Room,

The Kindergarten greatly enjoyed the Grandparents Day Tu B’Shvat event. There was so much to explore, create, taste and experience. The amazing art work they created ‘Tree Art by Kindergarten’ which graced the event now proudly hangs on the Purple Room Bulletin Board in the hallway. A very grateful thank you to the Pollack Family for giving the CJP children such an amazing playground where the children imagine, create, jump, play and strengthen muscles and friendships.

The Kindergarten conducted a Fruit Tasking Survey at Grandparent’s Day. After tasting many different fruits – a selection of over 15 different fruits – participants chose the one they enjoyed the taste of most and placed a sticker on the Fruit Taste Graph. The Kindergarteners counted the stickers for each and found that most people liked the melon taste best since it had the most stickers.

Kriyah -  Hebrew Reading
Supporting Kriyah, Kindergarten created their own card flowers, complete with Hebrew letters and Nekudos (vowels). Later in the week they created words with letters and nekudos in ‘mud’ slime.

Parsha
The children have been learning about the Aseres Hadibros (Ten Commandments) this week. They played ‘Ten Commandments Charades’ and acted them out for their friends. Ask your child to sing these songs with you:

Parsha Song:
(TTTO: The Little Bird is Calling)

I am your Hashem, I brought you from Mitzrayim
No other shall you serve, my Mitzvos observe
You shall not use in vain, Hashem’s holy name
Remember the Shabbos day, keep it a special way.
Honor your parents too, long life Hashem will give you
You shall not kill, that is Hashem’s will
You shall be moral and true, believe in the Mitzvos you do
Do not steal, when with others you deal

False witness never be, you must live truthfully
Don’t be jealous of your friend’s life, his things or his wife
The Torah Hashem did give, a guide for us to live
To Hashem always be true, because you are a Jew

Parsha Song II:
(T.T.O. This Old Man) ,
אנכי ד אלקיך  (Onochi Hashem Elokecho) I am Hashem the only One,
לא יהיה לך (Lo yi’hi’yeh l’cho) There is no other, not the stars nor the sun.
לא תשא (Lo ti-soh) Do not swear
זכור את יום השבת (Zachor es Yom HaShabbos) The Shabbos day is  dear.
כבד את אביך ואת אמך (Kabed es ovicho v’es imecho) Honor your parents and show them you care.

לא תרצח (Lo tirtzach) Don't end someone's life
לא תנאף (Lo sin’af) Don't take someone's wife
לא תגנב (Lo signov) Don’t kidnap or steal
לא תענה (Lo sa’aneh) Don't lie or tattletale

לא תחמוד (Lo Sachmod) is number ten, Don't be jealous of your friend
These are the Aseres Hadibros, written on the two Luchos.

Shabbat Shalom!

This week were learning about feelings. We used our journals to write about how we feel when we are happy, mad or sad. We practiced identifying different emotions by looking at faces. We played memory and charades.

We started learning about subtraction this week. We are learning to identify how the words in math help us to know if a problem is addition or subtraction. They did a great job!

On Thursday the kids were really in a creative groove. They all were really involved in their own projects and I let them continue uninterrupted. I enjoy watching them play and it gives me a chance to make observations about their thinking and who they are as a person.

Good Shabbos!

Dear Kindergarten Parents of the Purple Room,

Kriyah -  Hebrew Reading
Kindergarten is anticipating Tu B’Shvat next week and have been practicing reading words connected with this day. Some words Kindergarten learned this week were the names of the  שבעת המינים Shivas Haminim (The Seven Kinds) that Israel was blessed with:  חטה  chitah (wheat), שעורה se’orah (barley), גפן  gefen (grapes), תאנה te’aina (figs), רימון rimon (pomegranate), זית zayis (olives), and תמר  tamar (dates).

Parsha
It was interesting to learn that the Mon that was given to the Jewish People when they were in the desert could taste like any food they wanted. Kindergarten said if they got Mon they would like it to taste like their favorite food:

Jonah: Applesauce
Shimmy: Carrots
Ben: Watermelon
Vella: Chocolate
Nosson: Chocolate ice cream
Morah Perline: Tuna sandwich on rye with crispy lettuce and tomatoes

The children had fun guessing the tastes of different foods when they were blindfolded. Shimmy guessed right when he tasted the orange juice. Vella thought the grape juice was orange juice. Nosson guessed right when he tasted the lemon juice and grape juice. Ben thought the lime juice was grapefruit juice and guessed the orange juice correctly. Jonah enjoyed the orange and grape juice.

Parsha Song:
https://www.chabad.org/549237

To the promised land
Through the desert sand
A cloud guided them by day
At night fire led the way

To the sea the Jews fled
"Chase after them," Paroh said,
When the Jews saw Paroh’s men
"Save us!" they cried to Hashem

Hashem split the Red Sea
Our people now were free
Moshe sang a song of praise
To Hashem and His mighty ways

Song II:

Sing a Song with Moshe
(TTTO: Sing a Song of Sixpence)

Sing a song with Moshe,
Walking through the sea,
They went through the dry land,
Then they all were free.

When the Jewish were singing,
The birds began to tweet
Chirp, chirp, chirp, chirp
Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep
Twitter to the beat!

Tu B’Shvat and Trees
Kindergarten learned about parts of trees, then collected parts of trees from the playground to create Tree Art. After creating trees, they made a frame for the artwork made of leaf prints. Their artwork will be proudly displayed at the Grandparent’s Day on Tu B’Shvat, Monday, January 21.

Shabbat Shalom!
Morah Perline

This week were learning about trees. We started our week by going outside to look at trees and write about them in out journal. We drew a picture to go with what we wrote. Everyone is doing an excellent job of using capital and lower case letters when appropriate and writing within the lines provided.

We learned about the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees. We are creating a book with the information that we are learning. As part of this we have learned about chlorophyll and photosynthesis.

We learned about a hypothesis in an experiment and wrote in our journals about what we think will happen when we put celery stalk’s in water with food coloring.

Our lesson on symmetry was one of our favorites of the week! We practiced out fine motor skills by tracing and cutting half of a tree on folded paper to get a full tree.

Good Shabbos!

B”H

Dear Kindergarten Parents of the Purple Room,

Kriyah -  Hebrew Reading
Utilizing the letter/Nekuda wheels the Kindergarten focused on the Segol and Tzeireh sounds. The gel and gem bags presented sensory practice. Integrating Kriyah with Parsha, Kindergarten etched words out of Choshech (darkness) - aka black painted papers - to reveal bright colored words. They played a fun game with one child blindfolded so it was ‘dark’ trying to find any Jewish people for whom it was not dark.
Parsha
Kindergarten learned about special mitzvot in this week’s Parsha: the mitzva of Tefillin and Mezuza. Kindergarten had a special guest this week. Rabbi Deitsch visited and explained how the Tefillin, Mezuzah and Sefer Torah are written. They felt the real parchment and looked at the feather quill the Sofer (Scribe) uses to write the words in black ink on the white parchment. They searched and found many letters on the parchment and saw that many letters look a little different and some even had ‘crowns’! Thank you, Rabbi Deitsch for the enjoyable and comprehensive demonstration.

Some words Kindergarten learned this week were בא Bo (come), ארבה Arbeh (locusts/grasshoppers), חשך Choshech (Darkness) and מכת בכורות Makas B’choros (Plague of the Firstborn)

Parsha Song:

The tenth Makah, was fulfilled
Each first born Mitzri was killed,
Over the Jews, Hashem passed
It was time to go at last

Moshe told the people to prepare
Yetzias Mitzrayim, was near
There was no time to bake bread
They put dough on their backs instead

To remind us we were saved
Chag Hapesach, Hashem gave
In Mitzrayim slaves were we
Then Bnei Yisroel were set free

Parsha Songs:

New Moon, New Moon
(TTYO: Baa Baa Black Sheep)

New moon, new moon
What do you say?
I say the new month begins on this day.

Full moon, full moon
What do you mean?
The middle of the month, I am right in between.

Tiny moon, tiny moon,
Up in the sky,
The month is over, time to say goodbye.

Thank you, thank you,
Moon so bright,
I’ll look out of you each night.

Paroah in Pajamas
Paroah in pajamas
In the middle of the night
Paroah in pajamas
In the middle of the night
Paroah in pajamas
In the middle of the night
Oy Oy Oy Oy Oy

Baa Baa Little Sheep
(TTTO Baa Baa Black Sheep)

Baa baa little sheep
I’ll tie you near my bed,
Then I’ll paint my doorpost red.

I don’t care what Mitzriyim say,
I will take you anyway.

Baa baa little sheep
Ill tie you near my bed,
Then I’ll paint my doorpost red.

Parsha Discussions:
Choshech (the plague of Darkness): Imagine walking into a place full of riches, gold, silver and diamonds. No alarm systems, no surveillance cameras, nobody to see or know if you sneak something into your pocket... What would you do?

Nosson: I would not take anything.
Shimmy: We don’t steal.
Nosson: You have to ask first.

Tu B’Shvat
Tu B’Shvat, Rosh Hashana for the trees, is coming soon. Kindergarten explored many fruits. And vegetables, too. The trees offer so many varieties of fruits. They observed that some tasted sweet (red apple), some sour (lime, green apple) and some sweet and a little tart (kiwi). They checked out the seeds and saw the seeds look different in the different fruits.

Shabbat Shalom!

Dear Kindergarten Parents of the Purple Room,

Happy Birthday to Jonah!!
Kindergarten celebrated the 5th birthday of Jonah this week with a special CJP Birthday program party. The Kindergarten class is such a caring group of children: they were so happy to share this wonderful occasion with Jonah. Jonah, may Hashem bless you with much happiness and continued joy in learning. May your parents continue to have much nachas from you!

Kriyah -  Hebrew Reading

Kindergarten concentrated on Tzeireh (vowel sound ‘ay’) combined with Alef Beis letters this week. Every week there are words posted around the room that relate to the Parsha. This week, the children helped Morah spell the words. Even though they are not yet expert with all of the nekudos (vowel sounds), the children figured out how to tell Morah which nekudos should go under which letters.

Parsha
Some words Kindergarten learned this week were Vayechi (and he lived),  chai (alive), and bracha (blessing).

Parsha Song:
https://www.chabad.org/519469

To Ephraim and Menasheh, this bracha, Yaakov gave
"May the malach (angel) watch over you, for me he did save
In the name of my fathers, Avrohom and Yitzchak, too
May Hashem’s bracha, forever be with you

Hamalach hagoel osi mikol ra
Y’vorech es han’orim, vikorei bahem sh’mee
V’sheim avosai, Avrohom v’Yitzchok
V’yidgu larov b’kerev haaretz

The children learned that when Yaakov blessed his grandsons he crossed his hands so that his right hand lay on Efraim’s head and his left hand on Menashe’s head, even though Menashe was the elder and seemingly should have received the blessing for an elder son. The Kindergarten created a craft, tracing their right and left hand that they can move onto the pictures they drew of either Efraim or Menashe.

In honor of this week’s Parsha, the Kindergarten created their own ‘Sons of Yaakov’ box. Inside the box the children wrote each of the 12 sons’ names accompanied with a tile picture depicting the bracha they received from their father Yaakov. The children figured out the spelling of all the names.

Parsha Song:

Sons of Yaakov
(TTTO: One Little, Two Little, Three Little Indians)

Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Yehuda
Yissachar, Zevulun, Dan, Naftoli
Gad, Asher, Yosef, Binyamin
These are the sons of Yaakov.

Parsha Discussions:

In this week’s Parsha, Yaakov blesses his 12 sons before he passes away. Do you know someone whose father blessed them? What does it mean 'to bless' someone?

Nosson: My Tatty gives me a bracha on Yom Kippur but he doesn’t do on Fridays. He puts his hands on my head. It’s oldest to youngest so I’m always the last. Then he says something. He does it in Hebrew.

Shimmy: My Mommy and Poppa give me a bracha. It’s first my Mommy and then my Poppa but sometimes it’s both at the same time. Then she says words in Hebrew. I feel good.

Ben: But she only does it on Shabbos.

Yosef didn't invite his brothers to palace because he felt uncomfortable sitting at the head of the table. Imagine you became royalty. How would you behave if you were king or queen?

Shimmy: I would act good.

Ben: I would let everyone into my house, my palace. They can eat cookies. They could eat what they want.

Nosson: I would be nice to people. I would invite them for a meal. I would invite my brothers and sisters and people I know.

Vella: I would invite people over. I would give them only food. (What if they want something else?) I would throw them out.

Nosson: Or you could ask your servants to throw them out.

Please see the CJP Facebook page for pictures of the above and more!

Have a wonderful break. We can’t wait to see the children back at CJP on Wednesday, January 2, 2019.

Shabbat Shalom!

Morah Perline

We continued with our winter theme this week.

Our math this week focused on reviewing place value. We are working to understand how to deconstruct a double-digit number into tens place and ones place. I think we are starting to get the hang of it! We also practiced adding using our ten frames.

We reviewed nouns, verbs and adjectives. Our new lesson in reading was sequencing. We practiced sequencing this week by writing and illustrating building a snowman.  This week we were creating words from the word “ice skating”. The kids are getting really good at this! We started a new task that the kids loved where they have to identify absurdities. I make statements and they have to decide if it is true or absurd.

I’m so sorry I missed conferences. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me. I hope everyone enjoys the break!

Good Shabbos!
