Dear Parents,

Literacy

The Purple Room have added more words to their sight word board: it, I and you. While listening when books were read, the children found and read the sight words.

The Purple Room children completed their Machzor (prayer book for Rosh Hashanah) which they can bring to Shul to use on Rosh Hashanah. They illustrated their wishes and thoughts and some children sounded out and wrote the words. The Rosh Hashana songs the children have been singing are printed on the last two pages.

Math

Happy birthday to the world! This past Wednesday was the anniversary of the first day of creation 5780 years ago. The children entered the class to the tune of Happy Birthday and left at the end of the day with birthday crowns. The Purple Room Math Whizzes used the ‘Counting to 100’s’ card to count in 10’s to 100. They searched for 79, the last two digits of the current Jewish year (5779), and then found the number after, 80, for the new Jewish year of 5880 which will begin on the first day of Rosh Hashana.

Art

The Purple Room Artists drew a still life of the Shofar after discussing and closely observing its shape and colors. Surprisingly, Ari found blue in the shofar and there it was! The Purple Room Artists decided that the Shofar is almost a semicircle shape and learned about the crescent shape. Hammond suggested that it had a twisted crescent shape. The Art, somewhat of an abstract offering, is proudly presented in the hallway on the class’s bulletin board.

Self Development

The Purple Room began Show and Tell this week. The children have presented each day with such poise and eloquence while the audience respectfully listened and later asked questions. It is a wonderful opportunity for each child to learn to express her/himself. They shine as they have their moment being the center of attention. 

Rosh Hashana

The children have been exploring some of the different foods we eat on Rosh Hashana. Mason said there would be 100 seeds inside the pomegranate. Counting the seeds, the children made groups of 10 and then counted in 10s. 

The children heard the story of the little apple tree who wanted stars on his branches. Each child cut open an apple and saw a star shape in the center of the apple! Later, the children sampled the apple dipped in honey in preparation for Rosh Hashana.

Many people have the head of the fish on their Rosh Hashana table. The Purple Room Friends know this is because we ask Hashem to consider us as the head, not the tail. Morah Masha kindly brought a real fish for the children to see, smell and touch. Zoe said it smelled like a fish.

One of the activities the Purple Room Mathematicians enjoyed was counting the ‘pomegranate’ blocks with a throw of the dice, then adding them to create a tower.

Dear Parents,

Literacy

The Purple Room are keeping a sharp eye out for sight words the, to, and, and a. They are using the Waseca program to sound out letters to create words. They have created many words including cap, gas, dad, van and sap, to name a few. These words all use the a is for apple sound.

Math

The children collected groups of 10 sticks and created bundles of 10. Some groups learned about ‘counting on’ as in 10, 11, 12, 13…, using the 10 bundle to start counting with and then counting on.

Reinforcing eye hand coordination, the Purple Room Mathematicians created bundles with a rubber band around every 10 sticks. Getting the bundle into a rubber band, twisting it around and then looping it over the bundle can get tricky and needs practice.

Parsha

The Purple Room Friends were quite puzzled when they came to CJP one day and saw small red ribbons tied in many places of the classroom. Once they learned about the Parsha they understood why. When the Jewish farmer tended to his fields in the Land of Israel he would tie a red ribbon around the first bud he saw of each new kind of fruit of the 7 Kinds. These first fruits or grain, aka Bikurim, would be given to Hashem and taken to the Beis Hamikdash. The Purple Room friends know which are the 7 Kinds of fruit and grain the Land of Israel was blessed with.

Art

The Purple Room Friends are very busy in preparation for Rosh Hashana. They created stunning cards utilizing the Jackson Pollock art style for personal wishes to their grandparents for a sweet new year. For their own homes they created honey dishes for their Rosh Hashanah tables. 

Show and Tell

The Purple Room will begin to have Show and Tell next week. Each child has a day that he/she can bring something from home to show and tell about in class. This is a confidence building activity where the child expresses his/her thoughts about the item and answers questions from the ‘audience’. This is optional; he/she may decide to bring something or not.

Literacy

The Purple Room enjoyed using their new Letter Sound Cards this week being that the emphasis is on phonics, the sounds the letters make. This helps them learn how to sound out words. Find It, Make It, Write was a fun Literacy activity they enjoyed. This required finding the letter, making it with play dough, then writing it.

Math

Utilizing dominoes and Uno cards, the Purple Room Mathematicians completed one to one correspondence and created math equations with the help of the + and = signs.

Parsha

In this week’s Parsha the Purple Room Whizzes learned about the importance of returning lost objects and being sensitive to the feelings of animals. They know that if one must take eggs from a nest, they must first chase away the mother bird so she doesn’t feel sad. It is interesting to note that for this mitzvah (good deed) and the mitzvah of honoring one’s father and mother, Hashem grants the same reward of a long life.

Parsha Discussion: Have you ever seen a nest of eggs or baby birds?

Roni: I saw a nest in my backyard and it was built from sticks.
Hammond: I’ve never seen one so I don’t know what it looks like.
Jemma: I never saw one either but I think it looks like a house for birds.
Alice: Nests are always brown and the mommy lays eggs in it.
Mason: We had one in my pool and it was red and huge.
Zoe: It’s round and circle. It’s very big. The size of my hands.

Art

The Purple Room Artists greatly enjoyed the artist study of Jackson Pollock. (See this link for info how to: https://youtu.be/EncR_T0faKM

Action art, a common descriptive of Pollock’s style, was right up their alley. They painted huge canvases in the playground swinging their arms with paintbrushes full of paint; throwing, flicking and waving the brushes for full effect. In class they explored more Jackson Pollock techniques such as using yarn and moving marbles. The Jackson Pollock Kindergarten Art is now on display in the hallway. Should any parents wish to purchase this priceless work of abstract art, bidding begins at $10K. All proceeds go to the Chandler Jewish Preschool!

Dear Parents,

The Purple Room Friends worked with their Waseca sets this week. They learned about the different levels and how to work through each level as they increase in difficulty. They sounded out the words focusing on the ‘a’ sound in CVC words (CVC = Consonant Vowel Consonant).

In Math the Purple Room Whizzes tried to find many ways to make 6, 9 and some even tried to find ways to make 12.

In this week’s Parsha the Purple Room Friends learned about the largest court in the Land of Israel; the Sanhedrin and how the 71 judges sat in a semicircle while in the court. The Friends sat in a semicircle this week during Davening.

They also learned that a Jewish King would always travel with a Torah of his own. They played a fun game where they wore a crown and became a King and Queen themselves. They know that we must say a special bracha (blessing) when we see royalty.

The Purple Room Friends also learned about not wasting which included ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ – another feature highlighted in this week’s Parsha. Thank you to all who contributed to the Purple Room Recycle Box. The Friends went through it and decided what can be reused or reduced or recycled. They learned that we may not cut down a fruit tree. We may also only cut down other trees if we have a use for their wood. 

Discussion: Do you have a fruit tree on your property? 

Ari: I got a lemon tree.

Zoe: A grape trees. Just two grape trees. 

Mason: Lemon.

Hammond: I have a orange bush. Not a tree.

Roni: I have a watermelon growing in the ground.

Jemma: I don’t have any fruit growing. But my mom watered a plant and it got so big. Our cactus grew pink flowers and purple flowers.

Discussion: Suppose you were to build another room onto your home and needed the space where the fruit trees are growing. What would you do?

Roni: You could put it in a pot and put it in the new room.

Zoe: You can move the tree a little bit with your hand and make the new room at the same time.

Alice: You could build the room somewhere else.

Ari: If the fruit tree is already in a pot you can carry it. You could move it into the living room.

Hammond: If the tree gets too big in the pot you could make a hole in the ground and put it there. 

Art

The Purple Room Artists created Cotton Rounds Art with Pippettes to create a class mural which now hangs on the classroom door. Using the three primary colors, red, blue and yellow, they blended to create new colors.
