Dear Kindergarten Parents of the Purple Room,

Kriyah -  Hebrew Reading

Utilizing the letter/Nekuda wheels the Kindergarten focused on the Segol and Tzeireh sounds. The gel and gem bags presented sensory practice. Integrating Kriyah with Parsha, Kindergarten etched words out of Choshech (darkness) - aka black painted papers - to reveal bright colored words. They played a fun game with one child blindfolded so it was ‘dark’ trying to find any Jewish people for whom it was not dark. 

Parsha

Kindergarten learned about special mitzvot in this week’s Parsha: the mitzva of Tefillin and Mezuza. Kindergarten had a special guest this week. Rabbi Deitsch visited and explained how the Tefillin, Mezuzah and Sefer Torah are written. They felt the real parchment and looked at the feather quill the Sofer (Scribe) uses to write the words in black ink on the white parchment. They searched and found many letters on the parchment and saw that many letters look a little different and some even had ‘crowns’! Thank you, Rabbi Deitsch for the enjoyable and comprehensive demonstration.

Some words Kindergarten learned this week were בא Bo (come), ארבה Arbeh (locusts/grasshoppers), חשך Choshech (Darkness) and מכת בכורות Makas B’choros (Plague of the Firstborn)

Parsha Discussions:

Choshech (the plague of Darkness): Imagine walking into a place full of riches, gold, silver and diamonds. No alarm systems, no surveillance cameras, nobody to see or know if you sneak something into your pocket... What would you do?

Nosson: I would not take anything.

Shimmy: We don’t steal.

Nosson: You have to ask first.

Tu B’Shvat
Tu B’Shvat, Rosh Hashana for the trees, is coming soon. Kindergarten explored many fruits. And vegetables, too. The trees offer so many varieties of fruits. They observed that some tasted sweet (red apple), some sour (lime, green apple) and some sweet and a little tart (kiwi). They checked out the seeds and saw the seeds look different in the different fruits.
