Dear Parents,

Literacy

The Purple Room enjoyed using their new Letter Sound Cards this week being that the emphasis is on phonics, the sounds the letters make. This helps them learn how to sound out words. Find It, Make It, Write was a fun Literacy activity they enjoyed. This required finding the letter, making it with play dough, then writing it.

Math

Utilizing dominoes and Uno cards, the Purple Room Mathematicians completed one to one correspondence and created math equations with the help of the + and = signs.

Parsha

In this week’s Parsha the Purple Room Whizzes learned about the importance of returning lost objects and being sensitive to the feelings of animals. They know that if one must take eggs from a nest, they must first chase away the mother bird so she doesn’t feel sad. It is interesting to note that for this mitzvah (good deed) and the mitzvah of honoring one’s father and mother, Hashem grants the same reward of a long life.

Parsha Discussion: Have you ever seen a nest of eggs or baby birds?

Roni: I saw a nest in my backyard and it was built from sticks.
Hammond: I’ve never seen one so I don’t know what it looks like.
Jemma: I never saw one either but I think it looks like a house for birds.
Alice: Nests are always brown and the mommy lays eggs in it.
Mason: We had one in my pool and it was red and huge.
Zoe: It’s round and circle. It’s very big. The size of my hands.

Art

The Purple Room Artists greatly enjoyed the artist study of Jackson Pollock. (See this link for info how to: https://youtu.be/EncR_T0faKM

Action art, a common descriptive of Pollock’s style, was right up their alley. They painted huge canvases in the playground swinging their arms with paintbrushes full of paint; throwing, flicking and waving the brushes for full effect. In class they explored more Jackson Pollock techniques such as using yarn and moving marbles. The Jackson Pollock Kindergarten Art is now on display in the hallway. Should any parents wish to purchase this priceless work of abstract art, bidding begins at $10K. All proceeds go to the Chandler Jewish Preschool!

Dear Parents,

The Purple Room Friends worked with their Waseca sets this week. They learned about the different levels and how to work through each level as they increase in difficulty. They sounded out the words focusing on the ‘a’ sound in CVC words (CVC = Consonant Vowel Consonant).

In Math the Purple Room Whizzes tried to find many ways to make 6, 9 and some even tried to find ways to make 12.

In this week’s Parsha the Purple Room Friends learned about the largest court in the Land of Israel; the Sanhedrin and how the 71 judges sat in a semicircle while in the court. The Friends sat in a semicircle this week during Davening.

They also learned that a Jewish King would always travel with a Torah of his own. They played a fun game where they wore a crown and became a King and Queen themselves. They know that we must say a special bracha (blessing) when we see royalty.

The Purple Room Friends also learned about not wasting which included ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ – another feature highlighted in this week’s Parsha. Thank you to all who contributed to the Purple Room Recycle Box. The Friends went through it and decided what can be reused or reduced or recycled. They learned that we may not cut down a fruit tree. We may also only cut down other trees if we have a use for their wood. 

Discussion: Do you have a fruit tree on your property? 

Ari: I got a lemon tree.

Zoe: A grape trees. Just two grape trees. 

Mason: Lemon.

Hammond: I have a orange bush. Not a tree.

Roni: I have a watermelon growing in the ground.

Jemma: I don’t have any fruit growing. But my mom watered a plant and it got so big. Our cactus grew pink flowers and purple flowers.

Discussion: Suppose you were to build another room onto your home and needed the space where the fruit trees are growing. What would you do?

Roni: You could put it in a pot and put it in the new room.

Zoe: You can move the tree a little bit with your hand and make the new room at the same time.

Alice: You could build the room somewhere else.

Ari: If the fruit tree is already in a pot you can carry it. You could move it into the living room.

Hammond: If the tree gets too big in the pot you could make a hole in the ground and put it there. 

Art

The Purple Room Artists created Cotton Rounds Art with Pippettes to create a class mural which now hangs on the classroom door. Using the three primary colors, red, blue and yellow, they blended to create new colors.

Dear Parents,

The Purple Room Friends had a lot of fun with beginning sounds of words. Some ideas they had were: cake starts with a c sound, Hammond starts with a h sound, jump rope starts with a j sound, lollipop starts with a l sound, nest starts with a n sound, olive starts with a o sound, quilt starts with a q sound, under starts with a u sound, water starts with a w sound, and yellow starts with a y sound. They had a lot of sensory fun writing letters sometimes with shaving cream and paint, baking soda paste and salt.

The Purple Room Friends completed their Eric Carle study this week and read more of his books: Have You Seen My Cat, The Very Lonely Firefly, and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? They brought their Eric Carle artwork home this week.

The Purple Room Friends discussed this week’s Parsha (the Torah portion of the week) and learned how Moshe, the first leader of the Jewish People, was concerned that upon entering the Land of Israel, the Jewish People would see how the people there would daven (pray) to idols. Hashem commanded the Jewish People to destroy all the idols they could find and to only daven to Hashem. The idols were made of stone or wood. The Purple Room friends searched the classroom and collected much wood (popsicle sticks) and stones and made sure their classroom was clear.

Another mitzva mentioned in this week’s Parsha is Tzedaka. The Purple Room appreciate this mitzva and make sure to give Tzedaka every day. Jemma brought her tzedakah from home and gave it to Rabbi Deitsch so he could give it to people who are in need. (See video on CJP Facebook page). Zoe really wanted a tzedaka box for her home and Rabbi Deitsch kindly gave her one. The Purple Room Friends are so happy to be able to help others. The Purple Room friends know that the highest level of Tzedaka is when we give someone a job so that they can earn money with dignity.

Ari: So other people could get jobs.

Mason: I have a tzedaka wallet at my home. I put my money in there. 

Roni: We have Tzedaka boxes in the basement and upstairs. We give Tzedaka when it’s Shabbos and when we find stuff. When Mommy ‘s purse is lost Tzedaka helps us find it.

Zoe: Give them money when they don’t have any. They could buy stuff, food or toys.

Integrating sensory and fine motor skills was fun when the Purple Room Friends fished out coins for Tzedaka from the water.

Dear Parents,

The Purple Room Friends are quickly becoming comfortable with the routines and learning of their day. They are steadily becoming more independent in the mornings as they enter the classroom with a bright and friendly ‘Boker Tov’ (Good Morning) immediately followed by settling into the classroom for the day following their Morning List routine. 

This week the Purple Room Friends explored the artistic style of Eric Carle. In addition to adoring his books, the Purple Room created their own Eric Carle works of art incorporating the different brush strokes, textures and shades of color he uses.

The Purple Room Friends discussed this week’s Parsha (the Torah portion of the week) and learned how Moshe, the first leader of the Jewish People, was concerned that, upon entering the Land of Israel and becoming very involved in farming the land, the Jewish People may forget who really makes the fruits and vegetables grow. He therefore instituted that we thank Hashem when we eat. The Purple Room Friends are learning the brochos to make on each food and are remembering to thank Hashem for their food afterwards by ‘benching’ (Grace After Meals). 

Some of the Purple Room friends discussed planting:

Eliyohu: In California I had 100 big trees and flowers covered them. That was what I planted. I watered it with a watering can.

Alice: I had a garden and I grew lots of tomatoes and vegetables and stuff. I don’t think I remember if I ate them.

Jemma: I only planted a tree. A tree that grows flowers on it. I made a cactus. Something growed on it. Flowers growed on it. We planted it in a little cup. We put dirt in it and seeds in there.

Zoe: I planted tomatoes and oranges.  I kneaded it into the dirt. Everything growed.

Hammond: I never planted something. I might plant something today. I planted a lima bean in camp. It grew leaves.

The Purple Room Whizzes have begun a sight word list and have sounded out the letters in order to spell them. Some of the words are to and play.

Alef Beis Yoga was a hit this week (please see the CJP Facebook pics). The children collaboratively created the letters Alef, Beis and Veis and then struck a Yoga pose for each letter. 

The Cuisinaire math rods were introduced this week and the children are becoming familiar with the association of the color of the rods and the number each rod represents. They are meeting the challenge and figuring out math sentences utilizing the Cuisinaire. 

The Purple Room Friends give a HUGE THANK YOU to Bubby Bina, Alice’s grandmother, for generously providing the classroom with the cutest puppets and lots of fun Magna Tiles. The Magna Tiles are especially fun because they have the alphabet on them, too! Great for sounding out letters and creating words. Thank you, Bubby Bina, for joining in our journey of learning.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a fantastic fun year of learning in the Purple Room! This week the Purple Room Friends have been learning about their new schedule as Purple Room friends: how to start the day, how to care for the classroom materials, how to care for the paints and brushes and many other procedures. They have also been reviewing the Alphabet phonetically (sounds of the letters), Alef Beis letter recognition and number recognition. They began utilizing their Journals for ‘Journal Writing’ with pictures and, some children, with words. The Purple Room Friends have been practicing signing in in the morning utilizing the correct pincer grip and writing from top to bottom.

The Purple Room Friends discussed this week’s Parsha (the Torah portion of the week) and learned how Moshe, the first leader of the Jewish People, wanted so very much to go to the Land of Israel with the Jewish People. Unfortunately, Hashem did not allow him to enter the land because Moshe hit the rock instead of talking to the rock, to get water for the Jewish People. The Purple Room friends discussed what they really want with all their hearts:

“I would like with all my heart…”

Eliyohu: … to go to Disneyland.

Alice: …  to go to Disneyworld.

Jemma: … to give Moshe and Hashem flowers.

Zoe: … to go to Moshe.

This week’s Parsha also mentions the importance of recognizing Hashem and how much He loves us.  We remind ourselves of this with Tefillin and the Mezuza.

Jemma: I give them some flowers.

Ari: When my daddy comes in the morning to wake me up I help him make breakfast.

Hammond: I help them clean up the playroom by ourselves.
